Types of Crochet Hooks

Just as there are different types of yarn that can be used for crochet work, there are also different kinds of crochet hooks that are available in the market. When you are selecting a crochet hook, the first thing that you need to know is that you will find crochet hooks that come in different sizes. The size that you must choose depends on the thickness of the yarn that you are using. Typically you should have at least 4 hooks in your crochet kit - one for each category of yarn.

Crochet hooks can also made of different kinds of material. While there are some that are made from metal, there are others that are made from wood or plastic too. Besides these obvious classifications of size and material used, crochet hooks also come in different shapes and features.

The Afghan or Tunisian crochet hooks are great for creating large flat pieces of crochet work. These help in creating a stitch that is very similar to the stitches created in knitting. The Cro-Tat hooks are different form the regular hooks because they essentially combine the art of tatting and crocheting. This hook allows the crafter to combine tatting work with crocheted pieces easily. Double ended or travel hooks are also available. These have a hook at each end and invariably the sizes of these hooks are different. Double end crochet hooks are those that have the same size crochet hook on each side and are meant to be used when you have a double faced fabric in different colors. Then there are also the crochet forks, Maltese crochets and hairpin lace looms that you can work with.
