Different types of yarn used in crocheting

There are various kinds of yarn that you can use when you are crocheting. These vary in the type of material that they are made of and the weight that they have. Typically the kind of material that is used for crocheting falls into three categories -synthetic yarn, plant based yarn and animal based yarn.

Synthetic yarn is made from fibers that are man-made. Some of the examples of synthetic yarn include acrylic, polyester, nylon and rayon. The synthetic yarn options are almost always light and slippery and therefore difficult to work with when you start crocheting. Plant based yarns are made from plants such as cotton, bamboo and hemp. While cotton is relatively lighter, yarn made from hemp tends to be slightly heavier. Yarns that have an animal source include cashmere, wool, silk and mohair. Irrespective of the source of the yarn, the yarn for crocheting is created by twisting two or more threads.

Yarn for crocheting is also classified on the basis of weight. The unit used in most cases is yards per pound. These yarns are categorized into four groups - fingering yarn, sport yarn, worsted yarn and bulky yarn. Fingering yarn is always very thin and is also the most lightweight of the options available. This kind of yarn is used to make socks, laces, baby items and lightweight sweaters too. Sports yarn is about twice the thickness of fingering yarn. However, it is the worsted yarn that is the most commonly used option. Bulky yarn is the thickest and the heaviest of the yarn available for crocheting.
